Cast-in-place walls with stay-in-place forms have taken off with the development of insulating concrete forms. They are relatively flexible and have good insulation and built-in studding.
General
Tilt-up wall panels have been used in large, rectangular buildings with a simple finish for fifty years. But in that time there has been a steady advance in the construction process and the development of quality insulation and finish systems. Today many tilt contractors can economically produce buildings that are smaller and have complex designs and premium finishes .
Autoclaved aerated concrete has been widely used in Europe for decades and is now coming into use for small buildings in North America.
The material is lightweight because it is filled with many tiny air bubbles. It is available for wall construction in the form of blocks (for use as masonry) or panels (handled like precast panels). It offers good flexibility and integral insulation.
